Notice Your Strengths

Balanced stones labeled weaknesses, mistakes, insecurity, fear, doubt, and strengths, determination, focus, growth, strength, confidence

One of the best leadership lessons I ever learned wasn’t about fixing weaknesses. It was about noticing strengths.

Like many leaders, I used to spend performance conversations focused on the gaps.

What needed improving. What wasn’t happening. What someone needed to work on.

Those conversations were important. But they weren’t complete.

Over time I noticed something interesting.

The people who grew the fastest weren’t always the people whose weaknesses I focused on.

They were the people whose strengths I deliberately developed.

When people spend more time doing work that plays to their natural strengths, something changes.

They contribute more; collaborate more confidently; solve problems differently.

Most importantly, they begin to see themselves as capable.

That doesn’t mean we ignore development areas. Every leader has a responsibility to address performance concerns.

But if every conversation centres on what someone isn’t good at, we miss the opportunity to amplify what could become exceptional.

One of the tools I use with leadership teams is a simple capability conversation.

Ask, “When are you at your best?”

The answers are often incredibly revealing and where meaningful development begins.

The Leading Through Others framework encourages leaders to know their people deeply enough to create opportunities that stretch them while also drawing on their strengths.

Leadership isn’t about making everyone identical. It’s about helping every individual make their best contribution.

This week, take a moment to think about your team.

Who hasn’t had the opportunity to use one of their greatest strengths recently?

That question might change the way you allocate work next week.
