Ownership Isn’t Assigned — It’s Created

Seven diverse professionals in a meeting around a wooden table with charts and laptop

One of the most common frustrations leaders share is this: “I just want my team to take more ownership.”

But ownership doesn’t come from telling people to step up.

It comes from how leadership shows up.

If people:

  • Don’t feel safe to make decisions
  • Get overruled when they do
  • Or are constantly checked and corrected

They learn quickly –  It’s safer to wait.

And over time, that becomes the culture.

In Leading Through Others, I talk about ownership as an outcome – not an expectation.

It’s created when:

  • Clarity is strong
  • Trust is visible
  • Leaders step back at the right time

Because every time you step in too early, you unintentionally take ownership back.

And every time you hold the space, you give it back.
