Capability Gap or Clarity Gap

Not all performance issues are capability issues.

In fact, many aren’t.

What looks like underperformance is often a clarity gap in disguise.

The work isn’t landing, not because people can’t do it, but because they’re not sure:

  • What matters most
  • How success is measured
  • Where to focus their effort

And so, effort gets spread.
Decisions slow down.
Confidence dips.

From the outside, it can look like a capability problem.

But when you step closer, the issue is often structural.

Strong leaders take the time to diagnose this properly.

Before jumping to “They’re not performing”.

They ask:

  • “Have I been clear enough?”
  • “Have I set this up well?”
  • “Is the environment enabling success?”

Because when clarity improves, performance often follows.

And when it doesn’t, then you’re dealing with capability.
