The Risk of Assumption

Assumption is one of the quietest risks in leadership.

We assume:

  • People know what’s expected
  • People are confident in their role
  • People have the capability to deliver

And often, those assumptions go untested.

Until something doesn’t land.
Until performance dips.
Until frustration builds – on both sides.

What’s tricky is that assumption doesn’t feel like a problem.
It feels like efficiency.

It’s faster to assume than to ask.
Easier to move forward than to pause and check.

But over time, assumption creates misalignment.

Strong leaders replace assumption with curiosity.

They ask:

  • “What’s working well for you right now?”
  • “Where do you feel stretched?”
  • “What support would make the biggest difference?”

And through those conversations, they build a much clearer picture of capability — not just perceived, but real.

Because you can’t lead what you don’t fully understand.
