What does “alignment with the bigger picture” even mean?
It’s one of those phrases that we know as leaders.
We know of the importance.
But do you know how to actually do this?
I don’t think this is a skill we teach leaders well enough.
Because it is more than knowing what the strategy and outcomes are of the organisation or work programme.
It requires a level of understanding of your people that is often overlooked.
Alignment of the strategy and outcomes to the work that you are charged with delivering will only resonate with your people if it is communicated in a purpose-driven way.
⚡Their purpose/s.
⚡Their connection.
⚡Seeing themselves in the contribution to the outcomes.
⚡That their work matters.
It is also about describing what alignment, or delivery to achieve the strategy and outcomes LOOKS LIKE for you and your team.
When you can connect the ‘why’ (the strategy and outcomes) to the ‘what’ (delivery) in a way that makes sense to your team, you will all be better at figuring out ‘how’ you team will do this.
Then it is all about communication – reiterate and reinforce.
Whether it is a team meeting, a catch up or an external engagement, all of your team should be able to describe what you do, how it connects to the bigger picture and what that looks like.
How are you doing at aligning the work you and your team are delivering with the ‘bigger picture’?
And more importantly, can you all describe what this LOOKS LIKE?
