Leadership impact of LAY

Looking after yourself (LAY) leaders set a powerful example for their teams.

By modelling healthy behaviours, they demonstrate the importance of well-being and create a culture that values employee health.

This approach leads to:

✔️reduced staff turnover

✔️enhanced team motivation

✔️improved overall workplace satisfaction

Leaders can effectively model LAY by:

1️⃣Demonstrating healthy habits

Take regular breaks, set boundaries, prioritise physical and mental health, and manage stress visibly to inspire staff through example.

Yes, you are too busy. I get it. But unless you are looking to achieve burnout and model this as an acceptable outcome for your people – breaks are necessary.

Added bonus with this one is that a change of scenery, physical activity or a simple sit down have been proven to unlock solutions to problems due to the ‘unplugging’ of that part of the brain.

You know how it is, you come up with the solution to that nagging issue when you are on a walk, or in the car, or just anywhere other than your desk!

2️⃣Integrating LAY into Leadership

Balance discipline in LAY by planning activities like exercise, mindfulness, and reflection while maintaining focus on goals.

I know I am better at following through with activities when they are planned and diarised.

I had a mentor early in my career who challenged me to block out an hour each Friday, to go offsite and reflect on all the challenges and positives for the past week.

TBH – this activity was a game changer on so many levels.

I suddenly was able to see patterns week on week, meaning I could solve problems or put new strategies in place.

AND, this time was blocked out in my calendar, it was visible for the team and they could see me prioritising this important reflection time.

3️⃣Encouraging a LAY culture

Promote open communication, provide resources for well-being, and foster an empathetic environment that supports staff in prioritising their health.

Open communication and the promotion of it is easier said than done. But when you ‘Lead Through Others’ this is a necessity to getting your work done.

4️⃣Personalising practices:

Tailor LAY routines to individual needs to sustain energy and effectiveness as a leader.

What do you need to ensure your are LAY?

Have you considered this before?

What brings you the energy and drive that you need to sustain and motivate those in your charge?

Need someone asking you about how you are LAY?

Someone to ask the challenging questions you need to be asked?
